A Community Rooted In History

Lewisporte, located in central Newfoundland, has a rich history that began with its settlement in 1876. Originally known as Burnt Bay, the area was later renamed Marshallville after missionary William Marshall. The name Lewisporte came into use in honor of Lewis Miller, a Scottish entrepreneur whose logging operations played a pivotal role in the town’s early development. The arrival of the railway in 1900 transformed Lewisporte into a bustling shipping hub, particularly for the lumber industry, cementing its importance in the region.

During World War II, Lewisporte’s strategic location made it a key base for the Canadian Forces, supporting operations in nearby Gander and safeguarding vital oil supply lines. Following the war, the town experienced rapid growth and became a major distribution center for Newfoundland and Labrador. Its deep-water port established Lewisporte as the “Gateway to the North,” facilitating freight services to coastal Labrador and further solidifying its role in the province’s economy.

Lewisporte’s history also highlights its remarkable community spirit. After the September 11, 2001, attacks, the town participated in Operation Yellow Ribbon, providing shelter, food and care to stranded airline passengers, showcasing the warmth and resilience of its residents. Today, Lewisporte remains a thriving hub of commerce, culture and recreation, with its maritime heritage and community pride continuing to shape its identity.
